bill, the more you talk, the worse it gets!

So…

I watched Bill Maher the other night ONLY to see if he would apologize or say anything about the breastfeeding issue, and HE DID (speak about it, that is, not apologize)! He actually made matters worse by opening his mouth (not unusual for him) but I have to say that I was pretty happy that he was feeling some pressure in the first place.

After Bill declares Janeane Garofalo “America’s leading feminist” ( a complete absurdity! ) he goes on to ask her about Sally Field’s statement at the Emmys and then makes his statement about breastfeeding.

The Sally Fields problem is very serious as well since she was censored by Fox for speaking out against war. She said, “if mothers ran the world there would be no goddamn wars.” Maher goes on to say that women leaders have been and can be just as violent as men and the panel all goes off on women as leaders, NOT MOTHERS! Fields’ entire point was about mothers not just women.

Maher is absurd and truly ignorant. He then makes his point perfectly clear about how he feels about breastfeeding in public (for everyone who thought he was just saying women should be more “modest”).

Here is a transcript of the bit.

Maher: “Don’t you think there is a problem, that if you say anything that criticizes any woman… breastfeeding in public, which I’m against. I got a lot of calls saying I’m sexist. If I criticize a woman, it doesn’t mean I’m sexist anymore than if I criticize a black person means I’m racist.”

Janeane Garofalo: “It’s childish, when people accuse you of that it shouldn’t even be indulged. I don’t consider you sexist for the breastfeeding, it’s for all the other issues that I consider you sexist.”

Bill, if you don't have anything good to say, then don't say anything at all!

are you kidding me?

does anyone recognize this man/baby?

apparently Bill Maher is a breastfeeding rep for PETA in the UK.

I smell a rat!

get educated Bill!

Cheryl from Utah sent some poweful information:

~If every baby was breastfed for at least 6 months, an estimated 1.5 million lives would be saved every year. UNICEF

~"The U.S. government spends more than $2,665,715 a year to provide formula for the children of non-breastfeeding mothers participating in the WIC supplemental food program. Of course, this doesn't take into consideration the additional costs of caring for those infants who are statistically much more likely to get sick. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, higher breastfeeding rates could reduce US health care costs by $3.6 billion per year."

~"If every child in America were bottle-fed, almost 86,000 tons of tin would be needed to produce 550 million cans for one year's worth of formula. If every mother in Great Britain breastfed, 3000 tons of paper (used for formula labels) would be saved in a year. But formula is not the only problem. Bottles and nipples require plastic, glass, rubber, and silicon; production of these materials can be resource-intensive and often leads to end-products that are not-recyclable. All these products use natural resources, cause pollution in their manufacture and distribution and create trash in their packaging, promotion, and disposal." -- (Which directly affects global warming and so, yes, Bill Maher, it IS a real issue because mothers often quit because of gawking and complaining jerks like you).

a little education never hurt anyone. a lack of education can hurt a lot of people.

So I take back "hate crime"

I may have overstated my point when I called Maher's "promotion of misogyny...a hate crime". There is no comparison to the real hate crimes that are comitted hourly around the world, but there is a similarity because hate breeds more hate and as a woman I have to use my voice to speak out against misogyny. I can't help myself!

For me this issue is more about Maher's misogyny than it is about breastfeeding. Although, I am a huge supporter of breastfeeding and will post some great stats in a minute, it is the way in which Bill expressed his opinion with mockery, disrespect, and venom that struck me so strongly. Not only is he wrong about breastfeeding, childbirth, women's bodies and value, but his anger is palpable and promoting of further ignorance and hatred.

Hatre and intollerance is what I am taking a stand against.

Misogyny is not funny!

Bill Maher’s misogyny expressed on September 14, 2007 towards breastfeeding moms and women in general is on par with Don Imus’s racist comments that got him fired! Women continue to allow misogyny to continue and we need to stand up for our rights the same way we react against racism.

Bill Maher of HBO’s “Real Time” is a misogynistic ignorant adolescent who compares breastfeeding to masturbation and women having babies to dogs. He says the only place where breasts and food go together is Hooters. Bill Maher must apologize for his offensive attitude toward women and their caring for their babies.

There is no reason for this type of hatred to be considered humorous and we hope that HBO will educate its public and its “comedian”. Maher should attend a class on breastfeeding so that he actually understands its role in human survival, or have Carolyn Malone, who sponsored the Breastfeeding Promotion Act, on his show.

Watch the video for yourself, http://youtube.com/watch?v=Aa696L6M6Sw (fast forward to about the 7 min. mark).

I have started a petition to get HBO to make Maher apologize or more. To be included email: billmahermustapologize@comcast.net All email addresses are private and not shared with anyone.

Does Bill put a blanket over his head when he eats? Does he remove himself to a dirty public restroom to eat? If Bill can’t control his hormonal, physical, or emotional response when he sees an inch of the side of a woman’s breast while she feeds her child then he should get some therapy. His comments are disgusting, denigrating, prejudiced and inciting of hate and misunderstanding. His promotion of misogyny should be considered a hate crime.
